Amariah M. ’25 discovered her love for singing and performing in her middle school musicals and choir, and this passion remained strong in her as a Cathedralite. At Cathedral, Amariah is Co-Captain of the Constellations Dance Company, a member of both Music club and Theater club, and a performer in CHS dance shows, from the Winter Show and Latin and Ballroom Shows to the most recent the Hispanic Heritage Show. Amariah discovered Broadway Bound Workshop, a high school theater program run by Broadway Bound Kids, during the summer before her junior year. Broadway Bound Workshop is an eight month commitment consisting of weekly rehearsals with professional instructors which culminates in a show in the spring; the program is free of charge, giving students who lack access to the arts the chance to develop competence and confidence as performers. Amariah was selected to be one of the twenty high school students in the program!
Amariah is currently in her second year with Broadway Bound Workshop, and she reflects on how being surrounded by other students who love musical performance has helped her to grow in confidence and “step into herself more.” She surprised herself by learning how committed she could be and quickly learned the value of having such an intense commitment. She shares that she “can’t imagine herself without it” and hopes to study musical theater in college to pursue a career in it.
This fall, Amariah was one of five students selected to perform at the annual Gala in support of Find Your Light Foundation, a grant program founded by Josh Groban to ensure that every child has the opportunity to experience a quality arts education—including the Broadway Bound Kids students. The Gala took place at Jazz at Lincoln Center and featured world-renowned performers such as Josh Groban, Sara Bareilles, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Amariah’s group sang “Bridge Over Troubled Water” by Simon & Garfunkel, “Granted” by Josh Groban, and “Waving Through A Window” from the show Dear Evan Hansen. Being on stage with superstars was a surreal experience; she felt blessed and grounded at the same time, taking everything in, and surprisingly did not even feel nervous at the sound check.
Amariah is deeply grateful for all of the opportunities that Broadway Bound Kids has given her, and we are incredibly proud of her for her hard work being committed to intense weekly rehearsals as well as for being selected for this high profile performance opportunity.
