Students in Mr. Sentmanat’s music classes traveled to the House of Jazz for an incredible musical experience! They toured Jazz at Lincoln Center, including the Appel Room, the Rose Room, Dizzy’s Lounge, and a recording studio, in which they listened to a recent recording of the orchestra playing Dizzy Gillespie’s “A Night in Tunisia”! In the first auditorium, Mr. Sentmanat and his students sang a call and response song on the same stage that Whitney Houston has performed on; in the second auditorium, Amariah M. ’25 sang part of “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” a song which she performed with Broadway Bound Kids just weeks before in that very hall, with musician Josh Groban himself.
After the tour, Cathedralites observed a portion of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra’s rehearsal (JLCO). This incredibly talented and world-renowned jazz band has performed in 47 states and 45 countries. Cathedralites were captivated by the music of the 15 piece orchestra as they practiced songs from their Big Band Christmas set, which they will take on tour throughout December.
We owe a huge and heartfelt thank you to Arlise Ellis ’81, who graciously coordinated this extraordinary visit, and to her associate, Mr. Oliver Beardsley, for accompanying our group on the tour. It was a spectacular and once-in-a-lifetime experience!
