Last week, 26 students in Enliven Club visited the CFR Sisters (Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal) on 113th St. in Harlem. The CFR Sisters work with the poor in Harlem as their main apostolate, and they created a Christmas service opportunity for the girls in Enliven. The afternoon began with prayer in the church as the group asked for Jesus’ intercession to help them to serve well.
Accompanied by Ms. Hughes and Coach Taylor, students wrapped Christmas gifts for the church’s youth group and for the people who visit the food pantry on Saturdays to eat a hot meal. Some students also sorted clothing in their clothing closet. After wrapping presents, the students were given the opportunity to ask the Sisters some questions, covering topics from the Sisters’ daily life to how they discovered their vocations.
When asked to give advice for girls just beginning their relationship with Jesus, Sr. Emmanuel implored the students to “Go and be with God, even if you feel like you don’t know how to pray. I would stop by the church and it became a refuge.” The Sisters recommended learning to pray using Scripture, as one way to hear God’s voice.
Enliven students enjoyed the chance to spend time in service and in the company of the Sisters who were so cheerful and kind! Thank you to Sister Mae and Sister Emmanuel for your generosity! We are grateful that the Sisters will be visiting us at Cathedral to speak to our freshmen in March.
