Fight the Fight! Hope is in Sight! Any New Yorker walking near the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir on October 25 heard spirited chants such as these, yelled out proudly by Cathedralites as they walked through Central Park.
Earlier that morning, Emilee O. ‘25 shared the following part of the Morning Message, the announcement and prayer with which Cathedralites start every single day:
“Raising awareness for breast cancer is important for a ton of reasons. Ultimately when people are aware and have the knowledge they need, they are more likely to do screenings for early detection, avoid risk factors, pay attention to symptoms, fund research, and build overall community support.”
During the Message, Ms. Aybar also reflected on the heroic St. Gianna Beretta Molla, the female patron saint of doctors:
“St. Gianna was an Italian physician, a mother of four and the first female physician beatified by the Catholic Church. Gianna, who received degrees in both medicine and surgery, was known for her compassion and dedication to her patients and was also deeply committed to her Catholic faith.”
Before heading to Central Park, Ms. Aybar announced that Cathedralites had raised $1,500 for breast cancer research and patient support through their efforts, including proceeds from the “Dig Pink” volleyball game. Impressively, Alexandria B. ‘25 independently fundraised $281! With students gathered in the gym, dressed down in pink and wearing pink ribbons, Ms. Anci gave the following remarks before the momentous occasion:
“Today, we walk together not just as individuals, but as a united force of Cathedralites. We walk for the fighters, the survivors, and in memory of those who are no longer with us. Breast cancer affects millions worldwide, including people in our own families and communities. But today, we show that hope is stronger than fear, and awareness is a powerful step toward prevention.
Every step we take today matters. It’s a step toward educating others, encouraging early detection, and supporting those still on their journey. Together, we are walking with purpose, and together, we can make a difference.
Thank you all for being here. Let’s walk with strength, love, and hope in our hearts. And remember—awareness starts with us!"
