Together, you, as the next generation of adults, are the heroes that will rebuild and reimagine.
–Maria Spagnuolo, Principal, July 30, 2020
As promised, and upholding a 111-year Cathedral High School tradition, on July 30th the 98 members of Class of 2020 and their families joyously celebrated graduation at St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
Valedictorian Trinae Yagumyum and Salutatorian Tahira-Jahnai Vera spoke of their wonderful experience at Cathedral. Assistant Principal, Rosemary Eivers served as Mistress of Ceremonies. The faculty recognized the Class of 2020 with over 100 awards and honors and acknowledged the 60 recipients of $20 million in college scholarships and grants.
Commencement Speaker Debra Vizzi ‘81 addressed the Class of 2020 and their families. Debra attended Cathedral as one of the first students to receive a scholarship from Student Sponsor Partners (SSP) where she now serves as Executive Director. Her message of strength, hope, perseverance, giving back, remembering where you’re from, and thinking big resonated deeply in this extraordinary time.
Principal Maria Spagnuolo called the Class of 2020 “her heroes” because when they were asked to respond they did so with grace, integrity, patience, and selflessness. She spoke of their shared responsibility for advocacy and change and urged them to respond, never stop hoping, and always stay true to their unique selves.
It was a joyous socially distanced celebration one month and 27 days late!
