Queridos amigos,

Cuando me presento como profesor de Negocios, Finanzas y Derecho en Cathedral, mucha gente me dice que no sabían que esas eran materias de secundaria. Normalmente no lo son. Ciertamente, no lo eran cuando yo luchaba con lectura, escritura y aritmética. Entonces, ¿cómo llegué aquí?

Poco después de unirme al equipo de Cathedral, nuestra presidenta y directora me pidieron que cambiara de enseñar matemáticas a enseñar negocios. Dada mi experiencia profesional (30 años en Wall Street) y los consejos de mi famosa predecesora, Peg Kiely, sabía que era solo cuestión de tiempo. Sin embargo, al principio no estaba muy emocionado. Al cambiar de carrera, buscaba una aventura completamente nueva. Fue mi hijo quien me ayudó a entender que tenía no solo una oportunidad, sino una responsabilidad:

Papá, ¡esta es tu oportunidad! Si construyes el programa desde la perspectiva de un gerente de negocios, puede ser un cambio importante para la escuela, para los estudiantes, y para ti. No tienes que alejarte de tu experiencia; puedes ponerla a trabajar para la próxima generación.

Mi hijo tenía razón, por supuesto. Y este es el corazón de lo que enseñamos a nuestros estudiantes en cada clase: Cada persona, creada a imagen de Dios, es única y hermosa. Estamos invitados a participar en la vida de la Trinidad, y nuestros dones desarrollados son canales por los cuales la gracia de Dios fluye al mundo. Como miembros del Cuerpo Místico de Cristo, vivir una vida sin cuidar de nuestro prójimo es impensable. ¿Quién podría ignorar el dolor de un dedo del pie herido? ¿Y cuánto mayor es el dolor y sufrimiento del huérfano, la viuda o el inmigrante, los más vulnerables entre nosotros?

Cathedral ofrece a cada estudiante la oportunidad de seguir su pasión, educándose tanto en la razón como en la fe. Nuestros programas de excelencia en Medicina y STEM preparan a nuestros graduados para profesiones con impacto. De igual manera, Negocios, Finanzas y Derecho enseñan a los estudiantes a amar, buscando el bien del otro, y hacer lo correcto, de la manera correcta, por las razones correctas. ¡Sí, podemos tener éxito y hacer el bien!

Enseñar ha sido mucho más trabajo del que esperaba, con la planificación de clases y la corrección de tareas. Pero es un esfuerzo lleno de alegría, y no me imagino en ningún otro lugar. Nuestra administración me ha dado (y a las estudiantes) un gran regalo: la oportunidad de perseguir nuestros sueños y hacer el mundo un lugar aún más hermoso. Las relaciones que formamos y cultivamos son la clave de la felicidad. El amor es el ingrediente secreto. ¡Comparte la buena noticia!

Dear Friends,

When I introduce myself as a Business, Finance, and Law teacher at Cathedral High School, invariably, people tell me they didn’t know those were high school classes. Typically, they are not. They certainly were not when I was struggling with the Three R’s – reading, writing, and arithmetic. So how did I get here?

Shortly after I joined the Cathedral faculty, our president and principal asked me to switch from teaching math to business. Given my professional experience (30 years on Wall St.) and hints from my famous predecessor, Peg Kiely, I knew it was only a matter of time. However, I was less than enthused. In switching careers, I was hoping for a completely new adventure. It was my son who helped me understand that I had not just an opportunity, but an obligation:

Dad, this is your chance! If you build it out from a business manager’s perspective, it can be a game changer for the school, for the students, and for you. You don’t have to walk away from your experience, you can put it to work for the next generation.

My son was right, of course. And this is the essence of what we teach our Cathedralites in every class: Each person, created in God’s image, is uniquely gifted and beautiful. We are invited to participate in the Trinitarian Life and our developed gifts are channels through which God’s grace surges into the world. As a member of the Mystical Body of Christ, to live a life without caring for our neighbor is unthinkable. Who could ignore their own stubbed toe? How much greater is the pain and suffering of the orphan, widow, or immigrant, - the least among us?

Cathedral offers each student an opportunity to pursue their passion, educated in both reason and faith. Our world-class Medical Gateways and STEM programs prepare our graduates for impactful professions. Likewise, Business, Finance, and Law, where the students grow in love, willing the good of the other, and do the right thing, in the right way, for the right reason. Yes, we can do well and do good!

Teaching has been so much more work than I anticipated, the lesson planning and grading. But it is a joyful exercise, and I could not imagine being anywhere else. Our administration has given me (and the girls) a great gift – the opportunity to chase our dreams and make the world an even more beautiful place. The relationships we form and nurture are the key to happiness. Love is the secret ingredient. Share the good news!
