This fall, freshman Anita Mitaj had a singular goal: to make the Varsity Basketball team.
As a tenacious Cathedralite, Anita challenged Athletic Director Mr. Roland Brown to a game of 1-1 basketball. The deal was this: if Anita scored one goal—just one goal—Mr. Brown would put her on the team. (Mr. Brown, by the way, has a good twelve inches on Anita…)
On the afternoon of Friday, October 27, students, teachers, and administrators gathered in the gym to cheer on Anita. Within moments, Mr. Brown took his first shot but missed. Anita deftly took possession of the ball, did a quick lay-up, and scored a basket! For a moment, Anita thought she had won the game. On a technicality, her point did not count because Anita had not started from mid-court once she took possession of the ball.
After a brief exchange with Mr. Brown, Anita began again with renewed vigor and commitment. In the end, she was not able to score another basket…however, Mr. Brown decided to give Anita a spot on the Varsity team because of the amazing fight she put up. Congratulations to Anita and best of luck to all on the varsity team this season!
